Urckfitz signs with Houston Astros

After helping lead the Monroe Community College baseball team to a school-record 41 wins and a third-place finish at the 2008 NJCAA Division II World Series, pitcher Pat Urckfitz has signed a professional contract with the Houston Astros.

Urckfitz, a 6-3 left-hander, will report this week to Greeneville, Tenn., home of the Greeneville Astros of the Appalachian League.

Urckfitz won seven games during his two years as a Tribune, four as a freshman and three as a sophomore. He struck out 91 batters in 64 1/3 innings while holding opponents to a .219 batting average. Some of his biggest pitching came in this season's World Series. He tossed 11 1/3 innings of relief, allowing just one run on four hits while striking out 15. MCC went a combined 77-28 over Urckfitz's two seasons.

Urckfitz has been pitching for the Webster Yankees of the New York Collegiate Baseball League this summer. In seven appearances he had two saves and 25 strikeouts over 14 2/3 innings.
