Check Out a Human Book at the MCC Human Library

The MCC Human Library will take place on Wednesday, April 26, 2017, from 12:00 noon to 4:00 pm in the LeRoy V. Good Library on the Brighton Campus. The MCC Human Library will utilize an innovative and positive approach to challenge stereotypes and prejudices in a constructive and non-confrontational atmosphere of exploration and discovery. About 20 members of the MCC and Greater Rochester community who have a unique perspective to represent will act as “human books,” and MCC students, faculty, and staff will have the opportunity to borrow them for 20-minute conversations, either one-on-one or in small groups.

A diverse group of human books will be available for conversation that day. They include an Iraqi refugee; transgender individuals; Holocaust survivors; a deaf person; activists focused on poverty, civil rights, labor issues, gay rights, and community-building through art; a Kemetic yoga practitioner; a soul singer who is also a public defender; a first-generation college student turned community college president; a blind person who advocates for disability awareness; a third-party presidential candidate who is passionate about do-it-yourself politics; and more. There is even a microbiologist and cheese enthusiast whose human book includes assorted cheese samples!

Interested? Read descriptions of our human books and reserve time with them at https://bit.ly/mcchumanlibrary. Not ready to reserve a specific time slot? No problem. Just drop in on the day of the event and see who’s available.

This event is co-sponsored by the MCC Libraries and the PRISM Multicultural Center. Special thanks to Tokeya Graham (English/Philosophy), Kristin Lowe (Title IX), Gale Lynch (Global Education), and Shirley Provost (PRISM).
