DCC Faculty Highlight - Christine Plumeri and the MVP-MCC Leadership Team

Christine Plumeri and the MVP-MCC Leadership team have been very active promoting the Mentors in Violence Prevention (MVP) program in the past year.  MVP was founded in 1993 by Dr. Jackson Katz (jacksonkatz.com) at Northeastern University’s Sports in Society Program to empower student athletes and future leaders to intervene when faced with potential violence, bullying and harassment.  MVP is the leading gender violence prevention curriculum in the U.S. military, professional, college and high school sports teams, and law enforcement trainings.  Highlights from the past academic year include:

·        In November 2013 and March 2014, respectively, over 40 new Mentors in Violence Prevention (MVP), were credentialed in the fall and spring Train the Trainers’ Programs;

·        On April 2, 2014, Dr. Jackson Katz presented highly successful talks on both campuses and attended a luncheon with MCC administration, faculty, staff and students.

·        On April 19, 2014, Professor Plumeri’s Guest Essay on the MVP Program at MCC was printed in the Rochester Democrat & Chronicle. (See attached)

·        MCC student, Ted Carey, was named the recipient of the 2014 MVP in Action Scholarship.

The next Train the Trainers session will be held November 6-8, 2014 at the Damon City Campus.  Interested persons can reference the attached MVP-MCC Information Sheet or contact any of the following MVP-MCC Leadership Team Members:  Christine Plumeri, Sociology (HYPERLINK "mailto:cplumeri@monroecc.edu"cplumeri@monroecc.edu); Susan Bender, Speech Communications (HYPERLINK "mailto:sbender@monroecc.edu"sbender@monroecc.edu);  Joe Sturnick, Law & Criminal Justice (HYPERLINK "mailto:jsturnick@monroecc.edu"jsturnick@monroecc.edu); Tracey Britton, DCC Student Services (HYPERLINK "mailto:tbritton@monroecc.edu"tbritton@monroecc.edu)  or Michael Johnson, DCC Student Services (HYPERLINK "mailto:mjohnson@monroecc.edu"mjohnson@monroecc.edu) .
