Alpha Theta Iota Recognized as Best in State

Alpha Theta Iota, Monroe Community College’s chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) International Honors Society, was named the top chapter in New York state at the organization’s regional conference, March 7.

This marks the second time Alpha Theta Iota has received the Most Distinguished Chapter Award, which is based on students’ performance in the categories of scholarship, fellowship, service and leadership. Alpha Theta Iota took first place in the service and hallmark categories. In addition, the chapter also received PTK’s Pinnacle Award for increasing membership by 12 percent in one year.

Kathleen Moyse, database manager for MCC’s Work and Learn Program and an advisor to Alpha Theta Iota, received the Paragon Award, given to new advisors who contribute to the growth of individual members and who advocate for their respective chapters. Moyse’s award marks the third consecutive year an MCC advisor was selected for the honor.  MCC student Donna Johnson, president of Alpha Theta Iota, was elected the Phi Theta Kappa New York Regional President for 2003/2004.

This year’s achievements by Alpha Theta Iota are significant because of increased competition in the awards program, which resulted from efforts of the MCC contingent to reach out to fellow chapters during the year and share strategies for generating successful entries. The number of chapters submitting entries increased from 26 last year to 35 this year. There are 57 chapters statewide.

Alpha Theta Iota officers include: Donna Johnson, Pittsford, Ann Schwartz, Webster, Michael Compter, Rochester, Cindy Woods, Rochester, John Luckenboch, Rochester, Rosemary Boyd Parker, Rochester, Ian Rogers, Rochester, Felicia King, Spencerport, Rita Moose, Rochester, Elizabeth Robinson, Rochester, Penny Wickman, Webster and Cindy Easterly, Fairport.

The officers, members and advisors of Alpha Theta Iota wish to thank the entire College community for their support, without which the chapter's achievements would not have been possible. They also ask for this support to continue and carry them through the PTK international awards competition on April 2.
