Heart Health Information

Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of diabetes. It is a progressive disease that develops when the body does not produce enough insulin and does not efficiently use the insulin it does produce (a phenomenon known as insulin resistance).

Diabetes contributes to nearly 200,000 U.S. deaths per year. However, many people with type 2 diabetes are not aware they have the disease and may already have developed various complications associated with it.

Type 2 diabetes occurs frequently in people who:
· Are over age 45,
· Are overweight,
· Are African American, Latino/Hispanic American, Native American, Asian American or Pacific Islander, and
· Have a family history of the disease.
Type 2 diabetes may be delayed or controlled with diet and exercise. Learn more from the American Heart Association at https://www.s2mw.com/heartofdiabetes/two.html.
