Beware of Toner Scam

Several staff at the College reported to the Purchasing Department that a company based in a state out west is making random calls to departments that may have Xerox equipment.  The caller ‘pretends’ to be from Xerox, advises that the price of toner will be increasing, and encourages the department to ‘stock up now’.  This is all in an effort to get the MCC staff member to place an order for a very expensive toner over the phone.

Xerox does not do business this way.  It is clearly a ‘scam’.  Most Xerox equipment at the College is covered under a maintenance plan that includes toner and other supplies.

If you receive one of these calls, please do not commit to ordering any toner or other supplies.  Advise the caller that the College has centralized purchasing and that a properly executed purchase order is required for any order.  You may refer them to our department at x 2080.  Usually the caller simply hangs up on you once you direct them to Purchasing!
