"What's My Fate? From the Schoolhouse to the Jailhouse," is a discussion sponsored by the Monroe Community College Diversity Council, the Rochester Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., and Gamma Iota Boule of Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity. Judith Browne- Dianis, a lawyer and co-director of Advancement Project, which is a Washington, D.C.-based national, multi-racial civil rights organization, will be the keynote speaker.
Browne-Dianis, considered a pioneer in the movement to dismantle the school-to-prison pipeline in school districts, will discuss the pipeline and its impact on African American males. The Advancement Project, works closely with local grassroots organizations, already has significantly decreased student suspensions and arrests in Denver, Baltimore and Florida and is currently working with the Rochester City School District.
The Diversity Council partnered with The Rochester Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., sponsored a panel discussion and program this past October, on the issue of the disproportionate rates of incarceration of young black men. The panel used the book, "The New Jim Crow," by Michelle Alexander to spark the discussion. The panel included some of the highest ranks within our local educational, law enforcement, municipal government, judicial and legal systems. We invite you to Part II of this discussion.
