Future Educators club responds to homeless students' needs

In March, the Future Educator’s Club at DCC had a guest speaker, Elizabeth Reyes, the Assistant Director of RCSD’s Homeless Education program. She spoke with DCC students about her district’s practices as well as the laws protecting and helping students that are temporarily homeless. We discussed situations which might lead to families becoming homeless, the day to day struggles of being a homeless student, and how the schools help--from food and clothing, to transportation. As future educators we explored ways that we could help if and when we learn about one of our future students being homeless and in need of support and resources.

Our club president, Johnathan Young, contacted the local VOA family shelter in Rochester. We asked if we could provide a gift from FEA to support the youth at the homeless shelter and encourage them to continue to read. We collected infant, children’s, and young adult books. Our original goal was to have one reading bag in each of the 10 rooms at the shelter, with 2-3 books in each bag. The Education students responded greatly to this need and donated over 100 books, journals, crayons, pencils, and WaterWows! At the last meeting, FEA members decorated over 30 bags to share with the homeless students to read while at the shelter and then, to take home.

Future Educator’s club will be delivering these reading bags to the shelter in May. If you have any questions about our club or this project please contact our club president, Johnathan Young, at <
