Save the Date for MCC's Next Essential Discussion!

Save the Date for Monday, March 18, 2013!  Dr. Freeman Hrabowski, President, University of Maryland, Baltimore Campus will visit MCC for the second Essential Discussion:  Conversations at Monroe Community College.  The topic of this discussion will be “STEM:  Preparing our Nation’s Future Innovators.”

Dr. Hrabowski, a nationally recognized and inspirational speaker, has been at UMBC since 1992.  His research and publications focus on science and math education, with special emphasis on minority participation and performance.  In 2008, he was named one of America’s Best Leaders by U.S. News & World Report.

Dr. Hrabowski serves as a consultant to several national boards including the National Science Foundation and the National Institutes of Health.  He has received many honors for his contributions to education.  With philanthropist Robert Meyerhoff, he co-founded the Meyerhoff Scholars Program in 1988.  The program is open to all high-achieving students committed to pursuing advanced degrees and research careers in science and engineering, and advancing underrepresented minorities in these fields.

Dr. Hrabowski graduated at 19 from Hampton Institute with highest honors in mathematics.  He received an M.A. (mathematics) from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and four years later he received his Ph.D. in higher education administration/statistics at age 24.

Under Dr. Hrabowski’s leadership UMBC has become a top research university and a leader in graduating African Americans who earn Ph.D.s in science and engineering (TIME Magazine April 18, 2012).  He will deliver the morning keynote address sharing his perspective on STEM education pathways.  He will be followed by a panel of experts in education who will discuss the future of STEM education.  The morning presentations will begin at 9:15 a.m. in the Theater, and we invite faculty to consider bringing your class to hear from this inspiring educational leader!

Please watch future issues of the Tribune for highlights on additional afternoon speakers and for RSVP information.
