Explore Rochester IT--Information Technology Opportunities in Rochester

On Friday, October 26, faculty and students from the Office and Computer Programs Department attended a symposium hosted by Explore Rochester IT at Rochester Institute of Technology.  The corporate and academic sponsors and participants in the Symposium were Kodak, University of Rochester, University of Rochester Medical Center, Rochester Institute of Technology, Computer Aid, Inc., Bausch and Lomb, Wegmans, Energy East, Excellus BlueCross BlueShield, Frontier/Citizens, and Paychex.   The CIOs from these organizations talked about their IT initiatives and challenges in the industry.  Students were able to interact and direct questions to the CIOs as well as talk with staff about working in the IT career field.

Students from Monroe Community College and other area colleges are eligible to participate in the Explore Rochester IT program. The target group is first or second year students studying Computer Science (or a very closely related field) or Business with a strong IT focus. The program is also focused on women and students from under-represented groups - African Americans, Latinos/Latinas, Hispanics, Native Americans. A GPA of 2.5 or higher is preferred. Reliable transportation is required for participation.  Students spend the summer working in the IT operations areas of three different area employers. The participating companies in the 2006 program were Bausch and Lomb, Excellus BlueCross BlueShield, Energy East-Utility Shared Services Corporation, Frontier, University of Rochester and Wegmans. Each student will begin with one of the employers and then rotate to another every 3 weeks. Students will have assigned tasks and will get a first hand understanding of the business that might be impossible to gain under other circumstances.  Visit <<https://www.explorerochesterit.com>> for more information.
