Honor Society Named One of World's Best

Alpha Theta Iota has been named one of the top 10 chapters around the globe for fellowship.

The College’s Phi Theta Kappa honor society was recognized in the top 10 among nearly 500 chapters who competed for the society’s most coveted Hallmark Awards during the 87th International Phi Theta Kappa Convention last weekend in Grapevine, Tex. The award is given to chapters who assist inactive chapters, participate in regional and international programs, and develop campus unity.

Alpha Theta Iota received a Bronze Pinnacle Scholarship Award given to chapters for increasing their membership. The MCC chapter also was named one of Top 100 chapters for its contributions within the four hallmarks of scholarship, leadership, service and fellowship and a Five Star Chapter award for achievements in meeting the society’s five-star criteria.

Eight Alpha Theta Iota officers, an MCC alumnus and two advisors attended the convention. The awards come on the heels of success at the state convention in March, when the chapter took first in eight categories. Last year the chapter received the Pinnacle Obelisk, given to chapters who meet a rigorous three-year goal to increase membership.

Officers for 2004-05 are: Deborah Blonsky, president; Laura Darnieder, vice president of scholarship; Leroy Gamble, vice president of Damon City Campus; Stephanie Poulter, vice president of fellowship; Robyn Collins, vice president of publicity/promotions; Grace M. Guarino, New York regional historian; Katie Oechsle, vice president of leadership; Elizabeth (Molly) Wilson, vice president of leadership; Sarah Romashko, vice president of service; Lisa Heininger, vice president of service; and Amanda Wood, vice president. Brighton Campus Advisors are Jodi Oriel, program manager, Campus Center, and Dr. Lynn Bartholome, professor, English/philosophy.
