D&C Editorial Recognizes MCC Public Safety Director, Crime Prevention Web site

The Aug. 8 issue of the Democrat and Chronicle included an editorial praising MCC’s Lee Struble’s leadership and involvement in the International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators' crime prevention Web site https://www.iaclea.org/visitors/about/crimeprevention.

Below is the editorial:

MCC-related Web site provides safety information for students
Democrat and Chronicle Editorial, published on Aug. 8, 2008

Being well-informed is one of the best ways to guard against the unexpected, particularly where safety is concerned.

That awareness is at times lacking on college campuses among students, faculty and parents. The tragedy of the Virginia Tech massacre in 2007 rightly heightened the need for greater safety measures, and many college campuses began reviewing the procedures they had in place, or lack thereof.

But continuing that focus is key in order to be prepared if and when something else happens, on a large or small scale.

A new Web site headed up by Monroe Community College's director of public safety is exactly the type of tool needed. A part of the International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators, the site offers crime statistics, safety reminders and up-to-date information on the latest safety issues such as cybercrime.

It will be especially worthwhile for prospective students and their parents as they research colleges, as well as incoming freshman who may not automatically have their minds trained on issues of crime and safety.

Complacency alone can be a dangerous thing. Having a site that encourages continuous awareness is essential to ensuring young people are prepared for the cruelty that life can throw them.
