Skip Bailey Named Athletic Director

Dudley “Skip” Bailey of Brighton has been named the fourth athletic director at Monroe Community College.
Bailey, 53, succeeds Murph Shapiro, who retired May 31 after 19 years as the athletic director at MCC.  Bailey was associate athletic director during Shapiro’s tenure.

“It’s an honor and a privilege to follow in the footsteps of George Monagan and Murph Shapiro, two of the greatest community college athletic administrators,” said Bailey, who was an assistant AD under Monagan.  “This opportunity fulfills a dream that started in 1985 when Mr. Monagan took me to my first Region III Athletic Director’s meeting.”

Bailey, who played baseball at MCC and also served as that team’s head coach for 11 years, takes control of a program that has been consistently ranked among the best in the nation.  Tribune teams have won 152 regional championships and 20 national championships, including the 2010 national titles in women’s lacrosse and men's golf.

MCC is a two-time winner of the NATYCAA Cup, given annually to recognize overall athletic program excellence by two-year colleges based on success in championship competition at the national level.

“One of my major responsibilities will be to continue the athletic excellence of one of the top community college athletic programs in the country,” Bailey added.  “We have achieved this elite status because of MCC’s commitment to our athletic program, as well as having one of the top college coaching staffs at any level.”

While maintaining a high level of athletic success is a top priority, Bailey would also like to continue to develop academic and leadership programs for MCC’s student-athletes.

“We must continue to develop outstanding academic support services that will allow our student-athletes to transfer to their chosen institutions, including NCAA Division I universities, upon graduation,” Bailey said.  “We also need to further develop our leadership and community service programs so that we can better prepare them for the challenges that they will face after MCC.”

An infielder and captain of the 1976 MCC baseball team that reached the National Junior College Athletic Association World Series, Bailey went on to become an All-Big Eight performer both on the diamond and in the classroom at the University of Colorado.  He returned to Monroe in 1981 as an assistant coach to H. David Chamberlain, serving in that capacity for 15 years.

Bailey took over as head coach in 1997 and amassed a record of 451-204 over the next 11 seasons.  His teams won six NJCAA Region III championships and he was named regional Coach of the Year five times.  The 2006 team was the first in the program’s history to win 40 games and the 2007 squad advanced to the national tournament.

The president of the Western New York Athletic Conference, Bailey also has extensive service to Region III and the NJCAA.  He is the committee chair for regional soccer, baseball and swimming and diving, and he has served as the national committee chairperson for swimming.  Most recently, he was the national representative at the 2010 NJCAA Division III national baseball tournament in Tyler, Texas.

Bailey was inducted into the MCC Sports Hall of Fame in 1991.  He has three children: Brett, 30; Brooke, 24; and Shawn, 23.
