Ugly Warts of Grading #3 How Many Ways Can You Do A Bubble Sheet Incorrectly?

How many ways can you do a bubble sheet incorrectly? There are more than I ever imagined when I first started working with grades. The creativity taking place on the bubble sheets boggles the mind and, when we are processing hundreds of them on a deadline, causes extreme stress and anguish in the R&R Office. Please tape a Zoloft to every bubble sheet you turn in.

If you are using the hardcopy bubble sheet you need to remember to do (or not to do) the following-

Do sign and date the form. Unsigned forms are returned for signatures.

Do fill in BOTH the bubbles and the written grade columns. This makes it easier for us to catch discrepancies with pluses and minuses.

Do fill in the plus and minus bubbles if you are giving a plus or minus grade.

Do Not ADD names and bubbles to the front of the roster. The scanner does not read your handwriting and the additional bubble causes the entire roster to reject and then NO ONE gets a grade.

Do place all notes on the BACK of the roster and not on the front. We will read them. I promise.

Do Not use ink or magic marker. Only #2 pencil will scan. It’s like taking the SATs.

Do Not staple or tear or put tape or disfigure the bubble sheet. It will not scan if it isn’t in good shape.

Do Not give one person more than one grade. If you get to the end of your bubbling and there are several people left with no grade that means you gave more than one grade to several people above them. You have to start over and fix this. Please.

Do Not give students A+ or F- grades. These are not legitimate MCC grades. Check the back of your bubble sheet for a list of acceptable grades.

Do Not give an AU (audit) or W (withdrawal) on the bubble sheet. The last day to register to audit a course was January 27. The last day to withdraw was April 28.

Do give a grade (on the back!) to a student who has a WI grade listed. Students are continually in the process of getting their immunizations cleared and may have done so by the time we receive your grade sheet. If you indicate the grade the student should have on the BACK of the roster, we will be able to grade them as soon as their immunization hold is cleared.

Do turn your grades in some place where we can find them. Grades can be turned in at the R&R window (6-203) or at the lock box at the Information Desk or at the lock box outside the R&R Office at the Financial Aid end of the office. Please do not turn grades in at the Bursar’s lock box or push them under our door.

Do turn grades in on time. Grades are due at NOON on Tuesday, May 30. Grade reports will be run the night of May 30.

Tomorrow we’ll look at the ugly warts of grading online! Can’t wait.
