Ebooks on Kindles and other platforms at the MCC Libraries

The demand for ebooks has not gone unnoticed by the MCC Libraries. And just to keep things interesting, there is a real choice when it comes to the platform you choose in selecting your e-texts!

The number one choice for most people across the country is the Amazon Kindle e-reader.  The Brighton Campus Library offers Kindles for loan, containing leisure reading, including the wildly popular Hunger Games books, The Help, and George R. R. Martin’s Game Of Thrones books.  The DCC Learning Commons will have two Kindles available for loan, also containing current bestsellers.  In addition, several Sony e-readers are available at both locations, packed with classic works of literature.

For those who wish to access ebooks via their own computers, take a look at the new ebrary ebook collection.  Accessible through the library’s database page, ebrary’s College Complete collection features thousands of recently-published books in ebook format reflecting subjects as varied as nursing, career guidance, US history, computers and criminology.  All titles can be read directly on screen from any computer!  Likewise, the Ovid Nursing Community College Core Book Collection gives the user access to over 55 nursing and allied health books specifically geared toward the 2-year nursing program.

Finally, for people who wish to listen to their books while performing other activities, the MCC Libraries offer iPods with recreational reading as well as books on CD and self-contained PlayAways.  Just perform a search in the library catalog using either the term ‘ipod’ or ‘playaway’ to see what titles are available!

And, as always, if there are particular titles you’d like to see the library acquire in e-format, just let us know!  You can even send suggestions to Collection Development Librarian Rick Squires at rsquires@monroecc.edu .
