Volunteers Make Alumni Week and Homecoming a Success!

The MCC Foundation thanks the members of the Alumni Week and Homecoming 2014 Planning Committee for their outstanding effort to reconnect alumni, students and friends to MCC.  Together, we held a variety of very successful Homecoming events and are proud of all our partners within the college community that made it possible.

Our Alumni Luncheon and Golf Classic honoring Betty P. Smith ’82 held at Eagle Vale Golf Club raised $4,200 in support of the Betty P. Smith Scholarship for Returning Adult Students.

Community and college officials participated in a ribbon cutting ceremony for the grand opening of the new “College Green” which was followed by the western-themed Homecoming carnival featuring Michael DuBois the solo circus performer.  We had a day filled with fun, rides, a food truck rodeo, mechanical bull and music hosted by the Campus Activities Board.

Students and staff celebrated Spirit Day with the annual Faculty vs. Students Basketball Game hosted by Athletics and with music provided by WMCC The Pulse.

The Alexander Street Campus 50th Reunion Weekend brought together alumni from the college's founding classes at a variety of events including a history lecture by Eric Johannisson, a cooking class at the NY Wine and Culinary Center, a gala dinner and send-off picnic at Powder Mills Park.

Homecoming Day started with the 8th Annual 5K Walk/Run for Scholarships.  Over 400 MCC faculty, staff, alumni and community members participated and raised over $15,000 for student scholarships!  Scholarships totaling $4,000 were awarded to five to current MCC students.  Medals were presented to our 5K top finishers and award winners. Race results can be found at www.yellowjacketracing.com.

Thank you to all our team members for their enthusiasm and generosity.  Our two top fundraising teams were the Student Services Hoofers Miles for Mary team and the Lap for Linda team.  They were followed by Academic Services, TheTechies and The Trekies, Administrative Services, Applied Technologies, EDIWIS/Despicable We, Foundation Frolickers, GG 2 Shoes, Here Comes Treble!, Housing and Residence Life, Outdoor Unlimited, the MCC Swimming and Diving and Women’s Basketball teams, Teaching and Creativity Center, The CIS Flash and Team Moose.  Our largest team was the Engineering Leadership Council team lead by John Wadach with over 75 MCC student members.  Thank you to the planning committee, all the individual and team participants, team leaders, MCC staff and the many volunteers, including students from Nursing, VAPA and the Honors Institute, who helped make this event a success.  The 5K Walk/Run was followed by MCC Tribunes games and Tailgate Party sponsored by Sodexo, the MCC Association and GEICO.

Alumni Week and Homecoming wound down with an Alumni Art Exhibit and Open House made possible by Kathy Farrell and VAPA and featuring MCC’s own Alumni Hall of Fame member Peter Monacelli ’73.   The Student Events and Governance Association hosted a celebration for Damon City Campus students and staff.  And lastly, alumni took advantage of an exceptional opportunity to learn cooking and wine pairing techniques from Professor and Chair, Michelle Bartell, Chef Gerry Brinkman and Professor Dave Boni.  Special thanks to Kim Joyce and the Hospitality Department students who helped with everything from prep through plating to make the evening a success.

Thank you to everyone who supported and participated in the events, and especially to the following planning committee members for lending their leadership support to make this our most successful Homecoming celebration yet:
