Bob King Introduces County Assessors to MCC’s Agricultural Programming, GROW Monroe

Bob King, Ph.D. (Agriculture and Life Sciences Institute) met with 24 members of the Monroe County Assessors Association including assessors, staff and associate members on March 3 where he presented information on MCC agricultural programming and transfer programs and the GROW Monroe initiative*. He also reviewed recent changes in agricultural land use and marketing issues expected to impact future assessments.

Discussion included agricultural definitions, zoning versus assessment, farmland protection, soil maps, disaster designation, agriculture value exemption, and tax treatment of apiaries and greenhouses.

King has also successfully engaged area legislators to the New York State Assembly and Senate, such as Assemblyman Bill Reilich (pictured below), who have agreed to display GROW Monroe brochures and posters at their offices.

* Facilitated by the Agriculture and Life Sciences Institute at Monroe Community College, the GROW Monroe initiative develops consumer awareness and supports local growers and benefits people in Monroe County on many levels. Individual or families who buy locally purchase fresh-from-the-field agricultural products grown on Monroe County farms by people they get to know and trust. Buying local reduces consumer and product carbon footprints substantially, eliminating the need to ship product from hundreds or even thousands of miles away. Monroe County’s economy is strengthened, supporting local jobs and services. To date 36 Monroe County based farms, farm markets, and businesses participate in the GROW Monroe initiative.
