At his parents urging, political refugee
Gulwali Passarlay fled Afghanistan in 2006 in search of a new life in the United Kingdom. He was 12 years old. Passarlay will speak about his journey and put a face on the modern refugee crisis at the Holocaust, Genocide, and Human Rights Project’s (HGHRP) 10th annual Voices of Vigilance presentation, 7 p.m. Monday, March 13 in the Warshof Conference Center, Flynn Campus Center (Monroe A/B).
A recent graduate of the University of Manchester (Bolton, England), Passarlay is the author of
The Lightless Sky: My Journey to Safety as a Child Refugee (Atlantic Books). The book tells of his yearlong, 12,500 mile journey through 10 countries and how he overcame racism and poverty to ultimately become a successful college graduate, nationally recognized for his commitment to social change. The book has been published in six languages.
