City Deputy Mayor Talk on City Education Available Online

A small group of honors students bantered the role that the city government should take in the city school district, as a precursor to an hour-long presentation from Rochester Deputy Mayor Patty Malgieri.

The May 1 event at Damon City Campus, sponsored by the Department of Education and DCC Campus Center, attracted students, faculty, public and media (articles ran in both the City Newspaper and the Democrat and Chronicle).

During the initial half-hour roundtable, students discussed their perspectives on unique challenges in urban education and ideas for the future of our city schools. The small group comprised MCC honor students majoring in teacher education and city school students who participate in the Upward Bound program at MCC, a precollegiate program to strengthen high school students’ academic success and increase the potential for graduation and enrollment in college.

“Students need to take advantage of opportunities that are there in the school,” said one Upward Bound student. “Kids who fail, don’t participate.” Malgieri discussed the challenges that the Rochester City School District is facing and the vision the city has for change and improvement.
