College Updates from ETS

Over the holiday break and intersession, ETS has been working around the clock to complete network and system upgrades across all MCC campuses and sites. All of these upgrades and enhancements are the result of the various technology planning and funding vehicles in place at the college, including the technology plan, grants programs and college-wide strategic planning initiatives.

A brief list of the user noticeable updates follows with individual Web links to more information:

* Administrative and student e-mail servers were upgraded to Exchange 2003 running on a Windows 2003 Server cluster.  This upgrade provides three main new advantages including: faster response time, new Outlook Web Access (OWA) interface with Spell Check, signatures, rules, and Improved reliability/recovery time if there is a server problem.  It also keeps within our goals of keeping the student and faculty Web based e-mail experience the same so that faculty know first hand exactly how the student’s e-mail works and what it can and can’t do to better help students in their classes.

* A basic connection based, anti-spam solution was implemented that simply blocks spam from the 200 largest SPAM senders in the world who are responsible for roughly 90% of the world’s spam.  We anticipate a 50-75% reduction in SPAM at MCC as a result of this enhancement.
