Scholarship Opportunities Offered through the Mathematics Department


The MCC Mathematics Department offers several different scholarships each year. We are currently accepting applications for the following scholarship opportunities:

I. The Robert A. Fratangelo Memorial Scholarship

II. The Stuart R. Porter and Joyce R. Porter Endowed Scholarship

Although individual scholarship requirements vary, student may qualify for at least one scholarship if he/she:

Is a current student at MCC
Has completed at least 24 credit hours at MCC
Has completed two math courses at the level of  MTH 141 or MTH 160 or higher, or one math course at a level of Calculus I or higher

Has a GPA of 2.7 or higher (with a math GPA of 3.0 or higher)
Plans to major in mathematics or a math-related field

III. Beyond the Formula Endowed Scholarship

Student may qualify for this scholarship if he/she:

Is a current student at MCC
Has successfully completed at least 30 credit hours at MCC.
Has successfully completed at least 6 credit hours of mathematics including MTH 160 – Statistics I or the equivalent and have completed or be currently taking MTH 161 – Statistics II.

Has a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.0 or higher.
Has a Mathematics G.P.A. of 3.35 or higher.
Is planning on an academic major in statistics, statistics education or a field that would require further study and use of statistics.

IV.  Jan Z. Wiranowski Endowed Renaissance Scholarships

There are three J. Z. Wiranowski Scholarships. They are grouped in the following two categories:

Math and/or math-based science
non-traditional academic background and/or out-of-the-ordinary life experiences

NOTE:

The distribution of the awards among the applicants will depend on the qualifications of the applicants. Hence, it is conceivable that in any given year all three recipients could be receiving the same type of scholarship.

An applicant may be awarded up to two scholarships: one from the math and/or math-based science category and one from the non-math category. If more than one scholarship is applied for, a separate application must be submitted for each scholarship.

Although individual scholarship requirements vary, any full– time student currently enrolled at Monroe Community College may be eligible for the scholarships if he/she:

MATH AND/OR MATH-BASED SCIENCE SCHOLARSHIP

Must have successfully completed at least 12 credit hours.
Must have successfully completed at least 4 credit hours of mathematics at a level of Calculus I or higher, and must be currently enrolled either in a mathematics course or a mathematics related course at Monroe Community College.

Must have a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.5 or higher.
Must be planning on an academic major in mathematics, mathematics education, or a mathematics related field.

NON-TRADITIONAL ACADEMIC BACKGROUND

AND/OR OUT-OF-THE-ORDINARY LIFE EXPERIENCES

Must have successfully completed at least 12 credit hours.
Must have a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.3 or higher.
Must be able to demonstrate a degree of tangible accomplishments in the areas of interest and the field of specialization.

Must be able to show that she/he possesses some of the attributes and/or life experiences as sampled here (or the like):  creativity, passion(s), vision, determination; visible  progress and a clear movement toward accomplishing his/her goals or satisfying intellectual curiosity; strong and demonstrable commitment to hard work; determination and ability to face adversities; meaningful life experiences, ranging from being subjected to persecution, discrimination, abuse, or the like, to performing acts of courage, or having significantly and positively impacted the life of other human beings; other noble acts, noteworthy deeds or attributes. 

Must have a plan and a set of criteria for the continued education that are linked to his/her hitherto accomplishments and/or personal history. This does not exclude well justified changes of direction in life. In fact, if such a change is real, practical and useful, it is very welcome; in accordance with the basic fact of life that change is a must, so we must change.  

Must have successfully completed (or is in the process of completing by the end of the current semester) courses that are relevant to his/her professional objectives, in order to qualify for the award. It is left to the applicant, to convincingly elaborate on this compliance in a separately typed and signed statement.

V.  Jan Z. Wiranowski Universal Humanism of Hope

Any full – time student currently enrolled at Monroe Community College meeting the following requirements:

1.    Must have successfully completed at least 12 credit hours.

2.    Must have a cumulative MCC G.P.A. of 3.7 or higher.

3.    A brief informative meeting between the applicant and the founder of the Scholarship, Professor J. Wiranowski (Rm. 8-618; tel.: 292-2962), is required prior to submitting the Application.

4.    Read the Concept Information Pamphlet about Universal Humanism of Hope available from Professor Jan (Yahn) Wiranowski or in the Math Department Office  (8-510).

5.    A typed essay (1000 word minimum)  is required from the applicant, addressing the following:

*  Imaginative and creative exploration of the idea of Universal Humanism of Hope

*  How the idea of Universal Humanism of Hope has in the past and may in the future relate to the applicant’s activities and/or career.

Complete applications with essays and recommendations are due in the Mathematics Department Office no later than 4:00 p.m., Monday, March 19, 2012.
