Faculty Workshop Explored the Rise of Antisemitism and Xenophobia

Last Thursday, January 14th, the Holocaust, Genocide, and Human Rights Project held its annual human rights faculty workshop. Focusing this year on the rise of antisemitism and xenophobia, its purpose was to inform faculty and staff about these topics to better facilitate their inclusion in classrooms and other direct work with students.  Dr. Michael Dobkowski of Hobart and William Smith Colleges’ Religious Studies Dept., an expert on the history and current climate of antisemitism, presented on the changing face of anti-Jewish rhetoric and action worldwide.  Dr. Jethro Gaede (Anthropology/History/Political Science/Sociology) spoke on xenophobia in the United States, how to recognize it in current propaganda, and what needs to happen to respond to it.  Finally, Prof. Angelique Stevens (English/Philosophy) discussed protest literature and the power of the witness in response to the keynote speaker of MCC’s upcoming Voices of Vigilance program, Roya Hakakian, who is an Iranian-Jewish author speaking in the Warshof Conference Center, Flynn Campus Center (Monroe B) on Wednesday, March 9th at 7pm about the rise of antisemitism in Iran.

Over 50 faculty and staff members from divisions across the College attended and received pedagogical materials and related information designed to assist in their work with students.  This workshop exemplifies the Holocaust, Genocide, and Human Rights Project’s commitment to engaging our students and campuses in human rights education and advocacy.  For more information, contact Regina Fabbro (English/Philosophy) at <mailto:rfabbro@monroecc.edu> or x3464.
