Donald E. Day, MCC Retiree

The college was informed of the passing of Donald E. Day (Mechanical Technology and Quality Control Technology departments), age 67, on November 19, 2015.

Donald joined MCC in 1975 as an assistant professor in the Mechanical Technology Department not long after graduating from RIT. He later was promoted to associate professor and department chair of Mechanical Technology and Quality Control Technology departments. In 1989, he became full professor.

During his tenure, he was instrumental in revamping and improving the Mechanical Technology curriculum. In addition, he worked closely with Workforce Development/Corporate Services Department in collaborating with many different employers to develop and provide customized education and training to their workers. He was widely recruited to deliver industry training, giving MCC higher visibility in the community and inspiring a company to create a scholarship for MCC students.

As a member of the American National Standards Institute and the Society of Manufacturing Engineers, Donald was a recognized national authority in the area of geometrical dimensioning and tolerancing. His publication, “Inside Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing,” has been used by General Motors to train hundreds of employees from tool and die makers to inspection and product engineering staff.

In 1980, he received the Monroe Community College Distinguished Professor Award.

His contributions to the college included serving as faculty adviser to the Society of Manufacturing Engineers student chapter and as a member of various committees, including Faculty/Staff Advisory and Professional Development.

Upon his retirement in 1999 after 24 years of distinguished service with MCC, Donald was accorded the rank of professor emeritus.

Donald is survived by his partner, Judy Day; two daughters; two stepchildren; a brother; five grandchildren; six stepchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorial services were held at Hope Lutheran Church, 2 E. Main St., in Arcade. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to Sodus Bay Junior Sailing Association, 7433 Clover St., Sodus Point, N.Y., 14555.
