Wiretapping the Internet: CALEA and Higher Education - Educause Live Presentation

MCC will host the Educause Live presentation entitled "Wiretapping the Internet: CALEA and Higher Education" scheduled for Thursday, November 17 from 1:00-2:00 p.m. in the Third Floor Conference Room (Bldg. 1).  CALEA, the Communications Assistance for Law Enforcement Act, facilitates court-ordered wiretaps by establishing technical standards for interception points on public telephone networks. As interpreted and implemented since 1994, CALEA excluded the Internet and private telecommunication systems. Over the past year, on request of several federal law enforcement agencies, the FCC has developed and announced a reinterpretation of CALEA that covers both the Internet and private networks, including campus networks. Several associations and interest groups have announced plans to challenge this new interpretation of CALEA, on a variety of grounds. In this session, representatives from the American Council on Education and the American Library Association will discuss CALEA and the issues raised by its reinterpretation.  Presenters will include Terry W. Hartle, senior vice president of government and public affairs, American Council on Education and Frederick W. Weingarten (Rick), director, Office for Information Technology Policy, American Library Association.
