Be the Match Drive Is A Success

Student members from the Health Information Technology Club, Student Association of Dental Hygienists, Radiologic Technology Club and the Human Services Club (DCC) coordinated and held a bone marrow donor drive at MCC late last month under the guidance of the “Be the Match” marrow donor program.  10,000 patients need a marrow transplant at any given time.  Half receive one.  The “Be the Match” donor registry has 8 million members, but more donors are needed, especially from diverse communities. Patients are more likely to be a match to someone from their own ethnicity. The drive at MCC yielded 92 minority and 84 caucasian registrants.  Michael Garbin from “Be the Match” wrote in his letter of congratulations “with over 50% of your drive registrants being of minority ethnicity, this drive will contribute greatly to our ability to provide donors to seriously ill minority patients.”  The club members and faculty advisors who worked on this drive are to be commended for their hard work and excellent outcomes from such a vital project.  This is the third year for the drive at MCC and it has grown each year.
