Hurlbut Nursing Scholarship Awarded

Andrea Green of Macedon, Laura Kubasiewicz of Webster and Jayne Linderman of Bergen are the first recipients of the Hurlbut Nursing Scholarship at Monroe Community College. The three students will graduate from MCC's Nursing program with associate in applied science degrees in May 2003.

The scholarship was established by the Hurlbut Foundation in response to the local nursing shortage and was made possible by a donation of $25,000 to Building on Success: The Campaign for Monroe Community College. The scholarship is awarded to nursing students who are in their last semester of study, having earned a cumulative grade point average greater than 2.3. Nurses who plan to pursue a career in long-term care are given preference.

Robert W. Hurlbut, president, Rohm Services Corp. and a representative of the Hurlbut Foundation, established the scholarship in response to the current nursing shortage in Rochester and across the country. "For three generations the Hurlbut family has provided long-term health care services to the Rochester community," said Hurlbut. "We wanted to show our support of those students who desire education and careers in nursing. Through the scholarship we also hope to encourage today's students to consider geriatrics and long-term care-specialties which are increasingly important as our population ages," he said.

"We especially appreciate Mr. Hurlbut's generosity at a time when our community is facing a critical nursing shortage," said MCC President R. Thomas Flynn. "The establishment of this scholarship at MCC motivates our students to pursue meaningful careers in nursing, roles that are much needed in our community."

MCC graduates more nursing students than all of the other nursing programs in Monroe County combined. With more than 90% of MCC's career program graduates choosing to remain in the area, MCC's nursing program has a direct impact on the quality of health care in our community. MCC's Department of Nursing is accredited by the National League for Nursing Accreditation Commission and the New York State Education Department.
