VaPA Installs Hi Def TV Studio

The Visual Communications program (VC02), housed in the Visual and Performing Arts Department, recently received a Perkins Grant to upgrade their TV studio to a state of the art high definition facility located in building 4. VC02 students will now get hands-on experience with production equipment also used by stations such as the Discovery Channel and MTV, and sports complexes like the Miami Heat and NY Giants.

The new equipment includes the NewTek TriCaster 460 video switcher, JVC HD studio cameras, Chyron IP Lyric software and a Roland Digital Audio Mixer. With the TriCaster, students will be able to use green screen technology to create and edit virtual set designs, record in a variety of video formats and resolution and isolate individual camera recordings in addition to the actual video program. The TriCaster also has the capability to stream the productions to a number of websites like YouTube, Livestream and UStream. Once students learn to use the Chyron Lyric software, they will gain experience in  producing animated graphic pages (like you would see on TV during a sports game), title pages and credits, along with animated ‘bugs’ or station ID logos. The TriCaster switcher and Chyron software gives students access to a whole new way of TV production along with the skillset needed to work in the field once they graduate.

The old studio equipment was divided up and transferred to Monroe Community Hospital’s TV studio and the Rochester City School District. School #9 (Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.) will install the equipment at their facility for the elementary school children to learn on. In paying it forward, we hope to see some of these young producers and directors walk through the doors of MCC in future years.
