MCC's 5th annual Scholars' Day Colloquia and Scholars' Day Conference will be held on Wednesday, April 24 and Saturday, April 27, 2013. This year's events include two keynote addresses, with the Damon City Campus Colloquia Keynote given by Dr. Arlette Miller Smith, professor in interdisciplinary studies and English and African American studies at St. John Fisher, on Wednesday, April 24. The Scholars' Day Conference Keynote on Saturday, April 27, will be given by Dr. Robert Ballard, National Geographic Explorer, discoverer of the Titanic, author, lecturer, and recipient of the National Endowment for the Humanities Medal.
Information about Scholars' Day and our invited speakers is available at the Scholars' Day website (https://web.monroecc.edu/scholarsday). A formal call for participation will be made in the coming weeks, with a submission deadline in late February.
Meanwhile, we encourage faculty and staff to support and promote submissions from their talented and interested students. Faculty are especially encouraged to include opportunities in their course curricula that may generate student projects suitable for Scholars' Day presentations. Participating students need a faculty sponsor, but the presentation does not have to originate in conjunction with a specific class. Faculty research or other productions are also welcome.
The purpose of Scholars' Day is to showcase work of the college's students and faculty. Members from every discipline are welcome to submit proposals. Presentations may take many forms, including traditional presentations, panel discussions, poster sessions, demonstrations, performances, recitals, etc.
Awards for outstanding student presentations will also be given in the form of Scholarships.
This year, to facilitate faculty sponsorship and to promote effective student presentations, the Scholars' Day Committee, in conjunction with TCC, plans to offer workshops for faculty sponsors, to be held in late November. We'd like to encourage all faculty with an interest in sponsoring student presentations to attend one of these workshops (dates and location TBA).
Scholars' Day is a wonderful opportunity for students and faculty to exhibit their work, to engage in intellectual discussion, and to recognize the outstanding efforts of some of MCC's finest citizens. Last year, nearly 100 students and over 25 faculty sponsors participated, in addition to a handful of faculty presenters.
We hope to encourage you to take part in this year's celebration of academic achievement.
