Walk/Run for Water for South Sudan

“Every day, millions of South Sudanese, usually women and children, must trek miles to collect water from ponds, marshes, ditches, or hand-dug wells. This water is often contaminated with disease-causing parasites and bacteria. The results are pain, sickness, even death, especially among infants and children.”  (https://www.waterforsouthsudan.org/dying-from-water/)

In 2000, Salva Dut became an MCC graduate.  Yet at age 11, he was one of thousands of “Lost Boys” who survived Sudan’s civil war by walking across Africa’s harsh wilderness, dodging militia and wild animals, to reach safety in refugee camps.  Nineteen years after arriving in the United States, Salva returned to Sudan to search for his family.  His father had made it through the war only to become gravely ill from drinking contaminated water.  Salva decided then that he would find a way to make sure his father never had to drink contaminated water again.  After earning a degree here at MCC, he spent the next few years building his not-for-profit organization, Water for South Sudan, Inc., which drills fresh water wells.  Access to clean, safe water has profound benefits: educational opportunities, increased commerce, and the establishment of health clinics.  Salva’s story is one of incredible transformation, and WFSS continues to transform the lives of those struggling with the immediate and long-term effects of war, poverty, and genocide.

Since 2004, WFSS has established 137 clean drinking wells in South Sudan...and two of them have been created by students of MCC’s Holocaust, Genocide, and Human Rights Project!  The Project has been actively fundraising for WFSS since 2006 – to date, our students have raised over $45,000 to benefit the South Sudanese.  Join us as we host our annual 5K Walk/Run for Water for South Sudan and help us to change the lives of thousands in Sudan.  And a quick, beautiful walk around Monroe Community College's Brighton campus is all it takes!  Go the “extra mile” and use the attached sponsor sheet to raise even more funds.  The top 3 fundraisers will take home prizes!  We invite you to share information on our walk, along with the attached flyer, with your friends and family.
