Fall 2011 Registration Deadline

As MCC continues to examine its operational practices relating to improving both fiscal efficiency and student success, two college committees’ recommendations relating to the implementation of deadlines for the Fall 2011 semester have been accepted.  New practices for the Fall 2011 semester include:

Registration deadline of August 29, 2011

·        This deadline is one week before the start of Fall 2011 classes.

·        This deadline will apply to the initial registration of matriculated students for Fall 2011.  Initial registration is measured on a per semester basis and does not include registration activity from prior semesters.

·        As always, students can engage in schedule adjustment (i.e., drop/add) until later in the term.

Previous practice at MCC allowed students to enroll well into the first week of classes which runs counter to strong evidence that there is a significant relationship between the day of a student’s initial registration and his/her success in that term.  An analysis of MCC’s student records shows that—when compared to their peers--students whose initial enrollment is later than the week before the first date of classes have much less chance of succeeding.  Clearly, this practice did not support student success.

Drop for Nonpayment

·        A ‘drop for non-payment’ will be performed on July 29, 2011 for all students with previous registration activity for Fall 2011.

·        This first bulk drop will be followed by a weekly drop until the beginning of the semester.

·        In order to avoid being dropped for non-payment, a student will need to:  pay their bill OR enroll in a payment plan OR have ‘packaged’ financial aid.

Previous practice did not drop students that registered in August for non-payment and these students held seats that could have been made available to paying students.  Many of these students were eventually dropped for non-attendance after the term was well underway.  This new process will provide a more accurate sense of our enrollment and of the number of sections, faculty, and staff needed to serve students.

The college will track and assess the impact of the above and use this information to guide future practice regarding these and other possible deadlines.  College and Community Relations and Marketing are working to communicate these deadlines to our students and the wider community.  In the meantime, we ask that you communicate these deadlines to fellow staff and students throughout the Fall 2011 registration period – students will need to be encourage to complete both their Financial Aid and Admissions applications well in advance to avoid missing the registration deadline and/or being dropped for non-payment.
