MCC Awarded $1.35 Million to strengthen K-12 pipeline, health professions and Veterans’ education

The U.S. Department of Education awarded the following grants, totaling approximately $1.35 million, to Monroe Community College from the Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education (FIPSE). The grants will directly impact the educational and professional success of local teachers, health care professionals, veterans and students.

Strengthening the K-20 Pipeline: Community Center for Teaching Excellence
This $749,939 grant will support the launch of the Community Center for Teaching Excellence at MCC—an initiative involving local SUNY colleges, St. John Fisher College, the Rochester City and Rush-Henrietta school districts and the Center for Governmental Research. The center will strengthen the K-12 pipeline, reduce the number of students needing remediation at the post-secondary level, and improve college completion rates. According to the U.S. Secretary of Education’s Commission on the Future of Higher Education, approximately half of college freshmen do not meet placement standards and require some form of remediation. This grant is one of only 37 such FIPSE grants awarded nationwide.

Clinical/Medical Laboratory Technician Program
This $325,000 grant secured by U.S. Representative Chris Lee (NY-26) enables MCC and local health providers to prepare technicians for state licensure and strengthen the pipeline of highly skilled professionals for health care and medical research industries. The program responds directly to recent legislation that requires clinical/medical laboratory technicians (CLT/MLTs) to be licensed as of September 2011. Most technicians will need to earn their license to remain employed in this career field. CLTs are essential members of the health care community. They perform tests and procedures on all bodily fluids and tissue that are critical to the diagnostic process in determining health and disease. They also play critical roles in determining the nature of substances used by bioterrorists.

Academy for Veterans’ Success
This $275,000 grant supports MCC’s Academy for Veterans’ Success that was launched in 2009. Serving the educational needs of more than 500 student veterans, MCC is recognized nationally as a military-friendly school (G.I. Jobs magazine). The academy provides veterans with the necessary academic services to succeed in the classroom, such as tutoring and career counseling. It will expand to provide services for them to succeed in life with referrals to appropriate agencies and services to help them and their families adjust to civilian life.
