Sibley Building Safety

On Thursday, WHAM radio reported on a safety incident at the Sibley Building. Some of their reports were inaccurate. Here is what we know:

MCC learned on Thursday that a female (not an MCC student or employee) was approached by a male outside of the Sibley Building late Wednesday afternoon. The male suspect followed the female into the Sibley Building and the Sibley Building Tower, where he made inappropriate advances. The female left the building and told her mother of the incident upon returning home; her mother called the Rochester Police Department. MCC first learned of the incident through the news media. It is not clear if the incident is related to safety incidents in the Sibley Building earlier this month.

These safety issues concern us all. The Rochester Police Department, MCC Public Safety and Genesee Management are actively investigating this matter and have increased patrols in the area. If you see any suspicious persons or behavior, please report them immediately by calling 262-1414 or 911.

I want to assure you of the safety of the Damon City Campus. All of these incidents have occurred in other areas of the Sibley Building; there are no reports of incidents on our campus. Still, we recognize that faculty, staff and students must pass through the Sibley Building to get to the Damon City Campus. We continue to advise the college community to always be aware of your surroundings, walk in pairs or groups, avoid secluded areas and request an escort from Genesee Management on the Damon Campus or Public Safety on the Brighton Campus if you feel unsafe.

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact Public Safety, the office of DCC Executive Dean Dr. Emeterio “Pete” Otero or my office.

Thank you.
