On-campus Audio Conference on Dealing with Plagarism in the Online Environment Offered Today

REMINDER!

A workshop on the problems and issues of plagiarism and cheating using technology will be offered to the college community by ETS and the Distance Learning Advisory Committee today, Tuesday, April 8, 2003. This audio-conference entitled "Combating Plagiarism in Distance Learning" will be broadcast in Room 7-333 from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m.  To reserve a seat, please contact Sue Pellegrini at ext. 3017.

This audioconference will discuss the opportunities students have to use the Web to plagiarize papers and assignments, services faculty can use or purchase to identify plagiarists and plagiarized materials, models faculty can use to develop assignments that minimize plagiarism possibilities, and considerations for students from cultures that have little or no notion of intellectual property.

Hope Burwell chaired Kirkwood Community College's 2000 investigation into plagiarism issues and wrote the college's plagiarism policy which places the responsibility for proving they have not plagiarized their writing assignments on the students' shoulders, rather than on the desks of busy faculty members.  Burwell describes how this unique policy changed the plagiarism environment at the college.
