MCC Global Faces launched during International Education Week 2015 as a poster exhibit in conjunction with the Human Displacement Across the Globe exhibit. As you might recall, the MCC Global Faces exhibit of portraits was interspersed within the Human Displacement Across the Global display boards highlighting statistics, graphics and facts from the UN Commission for Refugees report.  The portraits were the result of a dynamic collaboration between Katie Leite’s English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) students, Holly Wheeler’s English students and Jasna Bogdanovska’s photography students.

This innovative project offered a high impact experience for our students, as received positive media coverage from SUNY <https://blog.suny.edu/2015/12/building-cross-cultural-connections-with-global-students/>  and Time Warner Cable <https://www.twcnews.com/nys/rochester/news/2015/11/24/flynn-campus-mcc-refugee-exhibit.html> .

Building on this success, MCC Global Faces, Version 2, was led by Katie and involved Jasna’s students and Judy Salzburg’s TRS students. The Transitional Studies English (TRS) students interviewed ESOL students and then presented their essays to photography students who created interpretive photos of the ESOL students based on the essays. Students experienced firsthand how global our local community truly is.

The Global Education and International Services Office worked with Phil Osterling (Marketing and Community Relations) to take the work of the students and turn it into a calendar. Phil was instrumental in creating the wonderful calendar design.  In addition, we could not have completed this project without the good work of the amazing staff in Printing Services. It is an all-around collaborative effort that showcases the ways in which we work to Make our College a Community that celebrates our global connections!

The calendar is based on the academic year and lists important MCC dates as well as global dates of interest. The MCC Global Faces Calendar is also the new home to the longstanding series “ESOL Voices” and features 8 ESOL Voices from our students who are enrolled in English for Speakers of Other Languages classes.
