Banner Self Service is NOT a Free For All!

Banner Self Service is NOT a Free For All!

I may have given the impression in my Don’t Touch article that we sort of looked the other way, i.e. didn’t audit transactions taking place on Banner Self Service (BSS), and therefore it was permissible to change friends or family members records as long as you weren’t in SIS or Internet Native Banner. This is not true.  The difference between SIS/INB and Banner Self Service is that you can’t override penalties, fees, tuition or deadlines in BSS.

The issues that have caused red flags in the audit concern faculty and staff adding their family members or themselves into closed courses, overriding parking fees and by- passing financial holds on records to register people, withdrawing people after the withdrawal deadline and other rule infractions. Banner Self Service does not give you the power to make these transactions, therefore, anything you can do through self service can be done by all students. You have no special privileges on BSS that you have on SIS or INB.

In the Registration and Records Office we have resolved the ethical issue of record access for ourselves, families and friends by strictly prohibiting our staff to make any transactions, even routine ones, in their own or their family member’s records. Thus my example of the R&R employee routinely entering grades as part of her job who, when her daughters’ grade roster arrived, gave it to another staff member to enter the grades.

The bottom line is to NEVER touch yours or a family member’s record in SIS or INB. In Banner Self Service you should only be adjusting your own personal information and not the information of other people, regardless of their relationship to you.
