Baseball wins third straight regional title

The MCC baseball team swept Alfred State Saturday afternoon to capture its third straight Region III, Division II championship and 18th overall.

The Tribunes took the first game 9-8 and won the nightcap 3-0.  Monroe (32-11) will host the East District Tournament next weekend with a birth in the NJCAA National Tournament on the line.

Adam Curynski (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) tossed a gem in the clinching game.  The sophomore threw a complete game shutout, allowing five hits and striking out nine.  He threw 142 pitches and was named the tournament's Most Valuable Pitcher.

The game was scoreless until the bottom of the sixth.  Steve Muoio (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas) led off with a walk and moved up on a single by Nate Grabowski (Pennellville, NY/Phoenix).  After a sac bunt by Sam Asis (Gastonia, NC/Ashbrook) moved both runners up, Nick Palmiero (Rochester, NY/Bishop Kearney) drove Muoio home with a long sacrifice fly to left field.

Muoio helped MCC pad the lead in the bottom of the seventh.  The freshman first baseman ripped a two-run single through the right side of the infield for a 3-0 lead.  Muoio reached base three times on the game and was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player.

The Pioneers threatened in the top of the ninth, putting two runners on with one out.  But Curynski got two players to look at called third strikes to end the tournament.

Dan Kaplan (Penfield, NY/Penfield) was 3-for-4 to lead the offense.
The Tribunes rallied back from an early deficit to take the opener 9-8.  Alfred took a 6-2 lead after two and a half innings before MCC got the bats going.

Monroe took the lead in the bottom of the fifth, as Adam Perlo (Fairport, NY/Fairport) hit a sac fly and Palmiero drove in another run with a single for a 7-6 advantage.

Alfred responded with two in the top of the sixth on a two-run homer by Gary Pitcheralle to reclaim the lead.
Not to be outdone, the Tribunes responded with two more in the seventh.  Asis hit an RBI single to tie the score at eight and Palmiero followed with a base hit to drive in the eventual winning run.

Matt McGovern (Ottawa, Ont./Gloucester) picked up the win with five strong innings of relief.  The freshman allowed two runs, one earned, and struck out two.  Brandon DeRosa (Fairport, NY/Fairport) came on to toss the final inning and two-thirds, giving up one hit and striking out three to earn the save.

Muoio finished 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.  Palmiero added two hits and two runs batted in while Mark Stuckless (Ottawa, Ont./A.Y. Jackson) had a pair of hits.

MCC head coach Skip Bailey was named the Region III, Division II Coach of the Year.  Check the MCC athletics website in the coming week for information about next weekend's district tournament.
