Passing of Professor Emerita Stasia Callan

I am sad to inform the college community that Stasia Callan, English professor emerita, passed away last Thursday, December 10. Stasia, who joined MCC as an instructor in 1967, was known as much for her love of literature as she was for her devotion to her students and beloved colleagues. From her earliest days here, she was also recognized as someone with a brave and generous heart.

After immigrating from Poland, Stasia earned her B.A. in English from Nazareth College and her M.A. in English from SUNY Geneseo. Five short years after coming to the U.S., she began her MCC career.

By 1971, Stasia had established herself as a diligent innovator as well as an exacting but understanding scholar-teacher and was promoted to assistant professor. Eight years later, she was promoted to associate professor.  When she became a full professor in 1987, a colleague noted that, “It is not unusual for her to spend every office and lunch hour tutoring weaker students.” Stasia inspired and guided her students with understanding and encouragement and generously supported her colleagues until her 2014 retirement.

A service will be held at 10 am, Friday, December 18 at St. Stanislaus Church, 1124 Hudson Ave., Rochester, NY 14621.
