Monroe Community College’s early care certificate program offers specialty training within the college’s highly-regarded education department. In one year, you’ll take the coursework and learn the skills you need to make a big difference in young lives, as you work with children in preschool and pre-kindergarten settings.
You may also earn course credit based on prior learning. Learn how to test out of courses and earn credit with CLEP.

Local Pre-K Programs Need Highly-Skilled, Dedicated Teachers
In the early care certificate program at MCC, you’ll gain skills in:
- Early care education
- Child growth and development
- Planning and implementing curriculum for young children
Upon completion of the program, you’ll be well-prepared for positions in child care classrooms, as well as home-based or center-based child care facilities – and you may qualify for further advancement in the field.
Your job title could be:
- Child care aide
- Preschool teacher
- Child care practitioner
- Nanny
You may also choose to transfer your credits to one of MCC’s associate degree programs in teacher education.
MCC created this certificate program in conjunction with the Child Care Council and NYSAEYC, and it meets the education coursework requirements for either the Child Development Associate Credential™ (CDA) or the Infant-Toddler Care and Education Credentials.

Description
This one-year early childhood education certificate provides coursework for those who work with or plan to work with young children in infant, toddler, preschool or early school-age settings of all kinds. Students will receive a basic understanding of principles of child growth and development, and will develop specific skills in planning and implementing curriculum for young children. Upon completion of the certificate, graduates will be prepared to assume positions in center-based child-care facilities, private pre-schools, before and after school programs and in-home care settings serving children ages infancy through age 8. The certificate program may also allow for further advancement within the child-care field.

1.Summarize specific Early Childhood developmental theories paying special attention to young childhood birth to age 8.
2.Explain the fundamental needs of young children.
3.Identify strategies that will enable Early Childhood professionals to successfully provide developmentally appropriate support and guidance for young children.
4.Explain the developmental milestones for infants, toddlers, preschoolers and early school age children birth to age 8.
5.Connect the family and child relationship to early childhood classroom experiences.
6.Articulate the importance of the Early Childhood profession.
