MCC has partnered with the Horizons National Student Enrichment program to offer a six-week, academic enrichment program for children in the Rochester City School District in grades K-6.
Absent summer enrichment, students tend to lose proficiency. Summer learning loss is a major contributor to the achievement gap and each summer, children fall behind in their academic skills and experience a phenomenon known as the "summer slide." Horizons at MCC aims to combat the summer decline in academic engagement and ultimately close the achievement gap by providing an enrichment program for children in the Rochester City School District.
Horizons at MCC provides a unique combination of academic, social, cultural, wellness and recreational experiences in a nurturing, close-knit environment. Children with a range of academic abilities attend the full-day program and work on reading, math and other subjects; participate in swimming lessons, taekwon do, and Zumba to increase their confidence; and engage in other academic enrichment activities. Quality summer enrichment programs, like Horizons at MCC, are an essential component to the successful education of our next generation.
Part of what makes Horizons at MCC unique is an inquiry-learning model that utilizes a balanced literacy approach to learning, while exposing children to the enriched environment and resources of an innovative community college. Horizons at MCC strengthens K-12 and college connections in our community by establishing partnerships that support and sustain the program. Horizons at MCC is a true learning community that relates to readiness and completion.
Horizons was founded in 1964 at New Canaan Country School in New Canaan, CT to serve children from low income families.
