An F-1 student is eligible to work on campus. Before seeking employment,
see the International Student Advisor in order to get instructions
on how to get the required Social Security card.
An F-1 student may not accept off-campus employment at any time during
the first year of study. The Immigration and Naturalization Service
may give permission to work under its hardship rule if the student
can prove (document) that his/her financial circumstances have changed
severely at the end of the first year.
Also, F-1 students can accept employment as a co-op student if the
program they are enrolled in requires such an activity. F-1 students
ready to graduate may apply to the Immigration and Naturalization
Service for practical training. If approved, this will allow the students
to work in their field for 12 months. Permission my be applied for
even if the student does not yet have employment.
