There are a variety of flexible and non-traditional ways to complete
coursework towards an associate degree or certificate program at MCC
including:

- Transfer Credit - Transfer credit awarded for work satisfactorily
completed at another accredited college or university. To receive
a transfer credit evaluation you need to request official transcripts
be sent to the Admissions Office.
- Departmental (Proficiency/Challenge) Examinations - A student
who can demonstrate knowledge in a particular subject may earn credit
for certain courses without attending classes, by taking a special
examination through the appropriate department. Contact Department
Chair within discipline you want to challenge for examination information.
- Online
Learning and Hybrid Courses via the World Wide Web - Credit courses offered on
the Internet through the MCC SUNY Learning Network (online). Currently,
40 campuses from the State University of New York offer graduate and
undergraduate online courses. Participate in the class from your
home, your office, the MCC campus computer labs or public library.
Courses taken may be used toward degree requirements.
In addition, the following programs can be completed entirely online:
- Nationally Standardized Testing Programs - College-level
examinations such as CLEP and DANTES taken in a variety of subjects
may earn college credit outside the classroom, if acceptable scores
are attained.
- Credit for Military Training - Educational opportunities
while in the military and evaluated by the American Council on Education
(ACE) may translate into academic credit. To receive a transfer credit
evaluation, matriculated students need to send a copy of their DD-214
to Veterans Services in the Counseling Center.
- Portfolio Assessment - Credit may be awarded for verifiable
college-level learning acquired through significant life or work experience.
Documented learning must be equivalent to courses offered at MCC.

- Independent Study - Qualified students may work independently
under the guidance of a faculty sponsor at MCC. (Note: Independent
Study is not intended as a substitute for an existing course.)
- Corporate Training, Professional Courses, and Workshops -
You can earn credit for experiences through in-service training offered
at your worksite and through education courses sponsored by professional
organizations to which you belong, when they have made a substantial
contribution to your learning.
All MCC programs (except Dual Admission) may be completed on a part-time basis (fewer than 12 credit hours). Please note: Some high demand programs have to be completed in sequential semesters. Students who do not attend for consecutive semesters would need to reapply for admission.
