- Is the International application packet available online? Yes.
The packet is available online on the On-line
Applications page. Just print out the packet and mail or fax it
to admissions.
- Will I be required to purchase health insurance: The sickness
insurance is mandatory for all international students holding an F-1
visa. The current fees may be found at the Health Services page. The
insurance is included with the tuition bill each fall. If you start
in the spring semester the fee will be prorated.
- What is the current student population of MCC and how many international
students are there? Currently there are over 14,000 students enrolled
here at MCC. There are currently over 100 international students from
over 40 countries attending.
- What programs can I matriculate into? Presently, the only programs
not available to international students are the Nursing, Dental,
Radiologic Technology, Massage Therapy, and English for Speakers of
Other Languages (ESOL) programs.
- Can I go to Canada to visit? Canada requires some citizens
of other countries to obtain a visitor visa. A link is available at
the travel section of the page to find out if you require such a visa.
- Is there an orientation for international students? There is
an orientation for the fall and spring semesters. A notice with the
date, time and location will be sent to the student's local address.
- Are there scholarships available to international students?
Campus scholarships may be available to international students who have
attended at least one semester with at a minimum grade point average
of 3.0. Students are encouraged to see the Financial Aid Office. Seeking
outside sources is highly encouraged for scholarships. For a list of
outside resources see contact the service desk at the Leroy Good Library.
- Is there an International Student Organization? The International
Student Organization is called the Global Union. They are located in
building 3 on the first floor.
- Can I receive information on immigration matters? The International
Advisor can be seen during scheduled walk-in times. If you are unable
to come in during those times you may make an appointment. To find out
the advisor's walk-in times call (585)292-2250.
- Does MCC offer transfer assistance to international students?
Career Center services are available to all students of the
college. They will help with the planning for the transfer to a four-year
institution.
- Can I receive tutoring or academic assistance? Tutoring is
provided by the college. The student should request these services as
early as possible to ensure best results. Tutors are available through
the Interdisciplinary Learning Center in building11, room 211.
- Do I need to pay taxes? International students must file tax
forms to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) on money they earn or their
investments earn. They may also be required to pay New York State income
taxes if they reach a certain income level. All employed international
students are required to submit an income tax form to the IRS by April
15th of each calendar year. The office of the International Student
Advisor arranges a tax seminar for assistance.
- What is a Social Security number and do I need to have one?
If you are employed in the US, you will need a social security number.
The number is a designation number to the account that people have with
the Social Security Administration. The Social Security Administration
started the accounts to benefit retired, disabled and people who are
left with an inadequate way to support themselves. All Americans put
into the Social Security account. You will need a letter from the International
Student Advisor plus an application to submit with your passport and
I-20.
