Prior Learning Assessment

You’re More Experienced. You Deserve Credit.

MCC provides credit for college-level learning you’ve gained outside the traditional classroom. This credit can be used to reduce the time you spend earning your Associate’s degree.

Prior Learning Credits include:

Credit granted for courses completed at another post-secondary institution which is recognized by an accrediting agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or Council of Higher Education Accreditation, (e.g., Middle States Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools, American Council on Education, etc.).

  • Credit is granted for courses completed at another post-secondary institution which is not recognized by an appropriate accrediting agency if credits from that institution are accepted by the reporting institution for that state on the same basis as from a fully accredited college or university.
  • Students whose cumulative average at a previous college was 2.0 (on 4.0 scale) or higher, may have all courses with grades of C or higher considered for transfer credit.
  • Courses bearing less credit at a previous institution than the course it parallels at MCC will only be given the number of credits earned at the previous institution.
  • Quarter hours of credit will be transferred as two-thirds of one semester hour; e.g., 9 quarter hours equals 6 semester hours.

Credit hours completed in the Military are granted as recommended by the American Council on Education (ACE) or Department of Defense (DOD) and are accepted up to the number of hours required by the degree program minus the 24 credit hours required at MCC.

You can earn credit for experience gained through in-service training offered at your worksite and through education courses sponsored by professional organizations to which you belong. These educational experiences must have been evaluated for credit by ACE.

ACE is nationally recognized as a major coordinating body that evaluates and makes credit recommendations for formal educational programs and courses sponsored by organizations that do not grant degrees, and which offer courses to their employees, members, or customers.

All prior learning credits are transcribed by MCC as transfer credit. Students are notified of prior learning credits received.

A student is eligible for only one method of prior learning credit per course.  For example, a student who has already received prior learning credit through CLEP/DSSI, AP or ACE, is not eligible for credit through portfolio.

MCC does not guarantee the transferability of credits awarded through prior learning.

Prior Learning Credit does not count toward the 24 credit hour residence requirement.

Prior Learning Credits may not be used to acquire or maintain full-time status.
