MCC baseball sweeps Mohawk Valley
UTICA, NY - Pat Urckfitz (Penfield, NY/Penfield) and Matt McGovern (Ottawa, ON/Gloucester) each tossed complete games to lead the MCC baseball team to a sweep of Mohawk Valley CC Tuesday afternoon.
The Tribunes (12-8) won the first game 3-1 and the second game 19-0.
Urckfitz went the distance in the opener, allowing one run on just two hits while striking out 11.
MCC got all the runs they would need in the top of the first. Cory Brownsten (Lockport, NY/Lockport) plated one run on a groundout and McGovern added an RBI single for a 2-0 lead.
John Morrison (Elmira, NY/Elmira Notre Dame) drove in the final run with a sixth-inning sacrifice fly.
The nightcap turned in MCC's favor early, as the Tribunes scored four in the first and four more in the second. The game ended after five innings due to the mercy rule.
McGovern allowed just one hit on the game, striking out 10 and walking none. The sophomore has yet to allow a run this season.
Brownsten led the way at the plate, going 3-for-3 with his third home run and four runs batted in. McGovern and Nate Grabowski (Pennellville, NY/Phoenix) each had three hits as well.
Kaleb Cunningham (Canton, NY/Stockton) and Dan Kaplan (Rochester, NY/Penfield) each had two hits and two RBIs, while Jeff Osler (Frankville, ON/St. Mary's) went 2-for-2 with three runs scored.
