MCC trio sign letters of intent

ROCHESTER - Three MCC baseball players have signed letters of intent and will continue their baseball careers at NCAA Division I colleges.

Cory Brownsten (Lockport, NY/Lockport) has signed with the University of Pittsburgh, while Dan Kaplan (Rochester, NY/Penfield) and Pat Urckfitz (Penfield, NY/Penfield) will take their talents to Hofstra University.

Brownsten, a sophomore catcher, hit .393 this fall with two home runs and 13 runs batted in.  He was the WNYAC First-Team All-Conference catcher after helping the Tribunes go 9-2 and reach the conference semifinals.  He also had a .750 slugging percentage.  As a freshman last spring, Brownsten hit .308 with three homers, 18 RBIs, and a .462 on-base percentage.

Kaplan, a sophomore third baseman, hit .469 this fall with a .625 slugging percentage and a .541 on-base percentage.  As a freshman, Kaplan hit .290 with three home runs and 23 runs batted in.  He saved some of his best hitting for the district tournament, when he went 6-for-9 with four runs scored and two RBIs and helped propel the Tribunes to the NJCAA Division II World Series. He was named Co-Player of the district tournament.

Urckfitz, a sophomore left-handed pitcher, went 1-0 with a 1.59 earned run average in the fall for Monroe.  He tossed 17 innings, allowing just nine hits while striking out 16.  Opponents his just .153 against him.  During his freshman season last spring, Urckfitz went 4-1 with a 3.00 ERA.  He threw 27 innings, allowed 21 hits, and struck out 37 while holding opponents to a .198 batting average.
