GCC edges Monroe for WNYAC title
BATAVIA - The GCC Cougars came through with two runs in the top of the eighth and held off a late MCC rally to top the Tribunes 5-4 for the Western New York Athletic Conference championship.
Monroe finishes the fall with a 9-3 mark. The Tribunes had defeated Alfred State 4-3 earlier in the day.
The game was tied at three entering the eighth when Genesee loaded the bases with no outs. After a popup, the Cougars plated two on a fielder's choice and an error to take a 5-3 lead.
MCC threatened on the bottom of the ninth. After a walk, Chase Grissom boomed a triple off the wall in right field to cut the lead to one. But Genesee got the next two outs to clinch the victory.
Grissom reached base five times on the game, going 4-for-4 with a walk. Willie Pantoja finished 2-for-3 with a run scored and two RBIs, while Brandon Philp had three hits.
The Tribunes scored two runs in each of the first two innings and held on for the win against Alfred. Luis Diaz had an RBI double and later scored on a wild pitch in the first for a 2-0 lead.
In the second, Pantoja and Diaz had RBI hits to make it 4-0.
Jason Beaumont got the win on the mound, going 6 1/3 innings and allowing five hits. The sophomore right-hander faced the minimum through six innings before the Pioneers put up a three-spot in the top of the seventh.
Pat O'Boyle went 1 2/3 scoreless innings and Matt Wing held ASC off the board in the ninth for the save. Diaz finished 3-for-4 and Andy Smietana had two hits for MCC.
