MCC baseball one step closer to regional title
Saturday's game two rained out
NORTH EAST, PA - Pat Corrigan (Rochester, NY/Rush-Henrietta) drove in the winning run with a pinch hit single in the bottom of the ninth as MCC defeated Alfred State 8-7 in the Region III, Division II baseball tournament.
The win put the Tribunes (33-12) one victory away from a fourth consecutive regional championship. The Pioneers are eliminated. Saturday's second game between Monroe and Mercyhurst NE was rained out with hopes of making it up Sunday.
MCC trailed 7-6 going into the bottom of the ninth. Matt McGovern (Ottawa, ON/Gloucester) led off with his fourth single of the day and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Jamie Fitzgerald (Nepean, ON/Merivale).
Jeff Osler (Frankville, ON/St. Mary's) then reached on an infield single and McGovern came around on a throwing error to tie the game at seven.
That brought Corrigan to the plate, and the freshman fell behind 0-2 before lacing a base hit inside the first base bag for the game-winner.
Josh Michalko (Fairport, NY/Fairport) got the win in relief to improve to 5-1 on the season. Michalko tossed 2 1/3 scoreless innings, allowing one hit that was promptly erased by a double play.
MCC fell behind 4-0 in the second. The Tribunes then cut the lead to 4-3 in the third on an RBI single by Nate Grabowski (Pennellville, NY/Phoenix) and a two-run homer from Cory Brownsten (Lockport, NY/Lockport).
Monroe scored three more in the fifth on RBI hits by McGovern and Fitzgerald and a sac fly by Osler.
Pat Urckfitz (Penfield, NY/Penfield) also pitched well in relief, striking out eight over 4 2/3 innings.
