MCC baseball wins regional opener
ERIE, PA - Steve Forster (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) tossed a complete game and Cory Brownsten (Lockport, NY/Lockport) drove in four runs as the MCC baseball team defeated Mercyhurst NE 10-2 in the opener of the Region III, Division II tournament at Mercyhurst College.
The Tribunes (32-12) scored two in the first, three in the second, and one in the third to take an early lead. MCC then added four in the bottom of the sixth. The game ended after six and a half innings because of the mercy rule.
Forster allowed two earned runs and struck out seven over seven innings. The sophomore scattered seven hits and improved to 6-2 on the season.
Brownsten had an RBI groundout in the first, a two-run single in the second, and an RBI sacrifice in the sixth for MCC. Dan Kaplan (Rochester, NY/Penfield) went 2-for-2 with three runs scored, while Kaleb Cunningham (Canton, NY/Stockton) and Matt McGovern (Ottawa, ON/Gloucester) had two hits each.
Steve Muoio (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas) added a two-run double.
MCC will play Alfred State at 12 p.m. Saturday as the round robin tournament continues. Mercyhurst topped Alfred in Friday's first game.
