MCC wins fifth straight regional baseball crown
ROCHESTER - The MCC baseball team captured its fifth straight Region III championship and 20th overall, coming from behind to defeat Genesee CC 10-4 Sunday afternoon.
The Tribunes (24-16) trailed 4-1 entering the top of the eighth before scoring six to go up 7-4. Monroe then added three more insurance runs in the ninth.
Tournament Most Valuable Pitcher Pat Corrigan (Henrietta, NY/Rush-Henrietta) earned his third win in as many days, tossing 3 2/3 scoreless innings in relief. CJ Masterton (Penfield, NY/Penfield) came on and retired six straight to get the save.
The eighth inning started with a bang as Ryan Gleason (Auburn, NY/Auburn) led off with a home run to make it 4-2. MCC then worked around a pop-up to load the bases for Ronnie Stout (Medina, OH/Medina), who ripped a two-run single to tie the game.
Jordy Smola (Greece, NY/Greece Odyssey) and Mike Tomeno (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas) followed with RBI singles and another run scored on an error to put MCC up 7-4.
The Tribunes tacked on three more in the ninth, scoring on a wild pitch, a Stout double, and a Tomeno sacrifice fly.
Masterton then shut the door, retiring the Cougars on nine pitches to touch off a celebration at the mound.
Tournament MVP Olivier Bertrand (Sainte-Adele, QUE/Polyvalente-des-Monts) capped a brilliant weekend with a hit and two runs scored. Stout was 3-for-5 with four RBIs and Tomeno had a hit and two RBIs. Both Stout and Tomeno were named to the All-Tournament team.
The Tribunes will play in a district tournament in two weeks. Opponents and location are to be determined.
