MCC finishes third at nationals
ROCHESTER, MN - MCC's bid for a fourth straight Division III softball title ended Saturday, as the Tribunes fell to the College of DuPage 6-2 in the loser's bracket of the 2009 national tournament.
MCC (38-11) finishes third in the nation.
DuPage jumped out front in the bottom of the second on the strength of a two-out, two-run base hit.
Monroe got one back in the fourth. Sam Jones (Addison, NY/Addison) doubled to left-center, moved to third on a groundout by Gabby Elsbree (Albany, NY/Academy of the Holy Names), and scored on a sac fly by Amy Nowak (Warsaw, NY/Warsaw).
DuPage responded with one in the bottom of the fourth before opening it up with three more in the fifth. The Chaparrals had a pair of homers in the fifth.
MCC's Kayla Steinkirchner (Canandaigua, NY/Aquinas) doubled and came around to score in the seventh, but that's all the Tribunes could muster.
Jordan Goode (Rochester, NY/Nazareth) finished 2-for-3 with a double and a single for Monroe. The Tribunes had just six hits on the game. Lindsey Grace (Honeoye, NY/Honeoye) went the distance on the hill, striking out six.
